The gross budget for Grudge Match was $39.7M and after a large $11.6M Louisiana tax credit, the net budget was $28.1 million. The pic was co-financed by Warner Bros and RatPac and WB handled worldwide distribution duties.
This was the second WB Stallone dud in 2013 after Bullet To The Head earlier in the year. The studio first dated Grudge Match for November 15 and then pushed it to January 10, 2014 and then finally settled on a Christmas release. It bowed into a very competitive holiday market against The Wolf of Wall Street, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, 47 Ronin, Believe and the wide expansion of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
Grudge Match received mostly terrible reviews and the novelty of seeing these geezers team up as essentially Jake LaMotta vs Rocky Balboa did not bring in auds. After a sizable holiday marketing push, it opened to $7,021,993 — placing outside the top 10 at #11 when The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug led the frame. Grudge Match fell a very modest 24.2% in its second weekend, indicating that the film might have strong legs, but it sank 64.2% in its third weekend to $1,907,216 and promptly lost most of its theater count. The film ended its domestic run with only $29,807,260.
Warner Bros released Grudge Match overseas, where it did poor business in most markets and grossed just $15.1 million. The film posted a disastrous $746,713 in the UK and a terrible $2,787,455 from Russia was the strongest overseas number. The worldwide total stalled at $44.9 million, which would return about $24.6 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross — far short of the P&A expenses and leaving the budget untouched from the theatrical receipts.
