This Richard Gere and Topher Grace vehicle was co-financed by Hyde Park Entertainment and Imagenation Abu Dhabi for $17 million and The Double was to be screened for buyers at Cannes, but the financiers held a screening before the festival which sold to Image Entertainment for just over $2 million. The acquisition came with a P&A commitment from Image Entertainment, who has little muscle when it comes to a theatrical release and the film came and went with little awareness. The Double opened in 11 theaters and grossed $26,640 with a poor $2,422 per screen average. The film expanded to 45 theaters in its second weekend to $60,193 with a $1,338 per screen average and was pulled out of release after three weeks with only $137,921. Hyde Park sold off overseas rights to numerous distributors who mostly dumped the film straight to video and The Double saw a small $3,558,311 from a small theatrical rollout.
