The Losers was originally set up with Legendary and Warner Bros financing in 2007, but the project stalled and Joel Silver’s Dark Castle took over financing duties. After a large tax rebate from filming the entire production in Puerto Rico, the budget came in at $32 million. Dark Castle was housed at Warner Bros and the studio handled distribution of their pictures. Most of the movies from Dark Castle were flops and Warner Bros severed a 25 year relationship with Joel Silver in 2012.
The Losers would also mark the first release from Warner Bros newly created DC Entertainment Inc., which was run by Diane Nelson. Warner’s DC Entertainment division had a terrible start in 2010 with The Losers and then Jonah Hex and stumbled again in 2011 with Green Lantern.
The Losers was dated for April 23 and bowed against The Back-Up Plan and Oceans. Reviews were mixed to poor and tracking was pointing to a weak $10M bow. The Losers lived up to its title and opened below the studio’s modest expectations with $9,406,348 — placing #4 for the weekend led by holdover How To Train Your Dragon. The pic had a modest 37.4% second weekend dip to $5,888,471 but then sank 68.6% in its third session to $1,847,290 when Iron Man 2 opened. The Losers closed its domestic run with $23,591,432.
Warner Bros put the film out overseas to terrible numbers everywhere and after the poor US run, clearly did not do much in the way of promoting the film. The Losers took in an anemic $6.2 million offshore and it went straight to video in major markets like France and Germany.
