The budget for Going the Distance was $32 million and New Line financed.   New Line’s distribution operations had been folded into parent company Warner Bros in early 2008, which handled the release.  This disposable romantic comedy was originally dated for August 27, but was pushed back last minute to September 3.  Most promotional materials already out in the real world, listed the original date.

Going The Distance bowed against The American and Machete and landed mixed reviews.  Tracking was pointing to a $14 million opening, but Going the Distance posted one of the worst opening numbers for a film playing in over 3,000 theaters.  It tanked with just $6,884,964 in 3,030 theaters — placing #5 for the slow weekend led by The American.  Going the Distance declined 45% in its second frame to $3,788,222 and then sank 64.2% in its third weekend to $1,355,246 and promptly lost most of its theater count.  The domestic run closed with just $17,804,299.

Going The Distance did not fare much better overseas and pulled in $24.2 million.  The worldwide total was $42M and WB would see returned about 23.1M after theaters take their percentage of the gross — which leaves much of the P&A expenses in the red and the budget untouched by the theatrical receipts.
