The spec script for The Glass House was in a bidding war with most of the studios and Sony beat out the competition by offering writer Wesley Strick $500,000 against $1.5 million, plus 2% of the adjusted gross once Sony gets its P&A and negative costs back.  This teen thriller was fast-tracked to production and the budget for The Glass House was $22 million.

The Glass House was dated for September 14, 2001 and opened against Hardball.  After the tragic events on the 11th, Sony decided not to pull the release, as they spent most of their allocated marketing budget already.

Opening in the aftermath of 9/11 certainly contributed to its poor box office numbers, but the movie was also largely panned by critics and pulled in $5,738,448 in 1,591 theaters.  It placed #2 for the very slow weekend led by Hardball.  The Glass House declined a modest 23.2% in its second frame to $4,407,767 but then sank 52.2% in its third session to $2,106,341.  The film disappeared from theaters with only $18,150,259.  Sony would see returned about $9.9 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, which would not cover their P&A expenses or touch the budget.  Leelee Sobieski was onscreen again four weeks later with the better reviewed Joy Ride.

The studio did not invest in a strong offshore rollout and The Glass House cumed just $5.4 million overseas.
